Marija Gimbutas, was an archaeologist and author. As a teen she survived World War Two in Lithuania and Europe. During her life's work she made amazing discoveries that inspired her theory of a peaceful Old European civilization during prehistory. She capped her career as a professor at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). 
From 1968 and 1980 Marija found the funds for and directed four major excavations in southeast Europe: 1968-1969 - Karanovo and Early Bronze Age tell, 5000-2000 B.C. at Sitagroi, Greek Macedonia 1969-1971 - Starcevo and Vinca settlement, 6300-5000 B.C. at Anza, Macedonia 1973-1975 - Sesklo tell, 6500-5600 B.C. at Achilleion, near Farsala, Thessaly, Greece 1977-1980 - Scaloria cave sanctuary, 5600-5300 B.C near Manfredonia in SE Italy
